My Web-Draft
People all over the world are using social media networks to communicate with their family and friends. These networks are changing the world on how we interact with others. This marketing circus is rapidly changing everyday, people and companies are becoming daily active members. Facebook, one of the most popular social networks, allows their members to connect and communicate in a new innovative way. Effective communication is obtained by supplying multiple ways to connect with others, networking oneself by profiles, providing additional add-ons, providing other information from links, and displaying images and videos.
Before disscussing how Facebook has effected the ways we communicate with others, it's important to understand how social media networks work. All networks require a membership; most are free and accounts are updated immatialdely. After becoming a member you can begin your adventure. Creating a profile with limited information, your hobbies and interest will be displayed to all users. Members can join organizations or clubs and conversate with other who have similar interest. Your personal network can grow when becoming friends with others. This linking web of friendship creates several connections with people from all over the world.
Facebook creates millions of conversations while bringing together like-minded individuals into a virtual community. Recent survey conducted by Facebook showed there are more than 400 million active users. They offer over 70 different translations and 70% of their users are outside of the United States. Studies also revealed that 50% of their members log-in to their account on a daily basis. These statistics show evidence that Facebook is transforming verbal communication into virtual communication.
Facebook supplies many different communication tools for their members. These tools include posting comments on other members profile wall, conducting an instant-live chat box, messaging system, updating personal status, and commenting on other's status and images. These informal yet fast communication tools are convienent for members. For instance, if a message is urgent a member may use an instant chat box (if the member is online) to reach another member. Messaging system tends to be used for longer messages with little or no urgency to the replier. The most popluar communication tool Facebook offers is wall postings by others. These communication messages are greetings or conversation starters that are posted between members. Depending on privacy settings (which will be discussed later), others can also view one's profile wall and can also comment on wall postings. Status updates are made to tell others what you are doing at that specific time. Others can know what you are doing without even speaking (or for this case typing) to you. These tools also serves a way for people to meet new friends and establish new relationships.
As stated before, Facbook's main concentration is to connect and establish relationships through their online website. Members do this my adding and accepting friends who are also members. Friends usually are from the same area or share a common interest. The Facebook family grows rapidly when members confirm friend acceptances. Friends can start groups and can request others to join. Some groups have over 5 million members from all over the worls. Groups have become popular on Facebook and companies have also recognized this as an effective marketing tool.
Major corporations, including Disney, use Facebook daily to increase awarness about their products. Companies can post updates on productions, supply coupons to group members, and send messages. Most corporations have a seperate department who work on social media networks while reaching cutomers and potential customers. Since Facebook is free, corporations are able to present a message fast and effective while reaching a tremendous amount of members.
