Annotated Bibliography Final Copy w/ 10 Sources

Boyd, Donah M., Nicole B. Ellison. “Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship”. Michigan State University, 2007. Print.

This source’s main purpose is to explain the history, definition and phenomenal of social network sites (SNSs). SNSs are merging cultures while creating relationships with those with similar interest. It explains the origins of several SNSs and how they became popular so fast. It discusses how different cultures use these as communication tools.

This piece contains a lot of background information that is needed to understand the origins of SNSs. Even though there is not a specific study conducted in this piece, it helps audience members understand SNSs as it evolves and grows over night. It’s hard to fully understand what SNSs are the most effective ways to interact. Audience member may include who don’t understand SNSs. The limitation may be with their audience members because audience members may not fully understand the origin of SNSs because it still is “new” to the world.

This background information will be useful in my project because I will supply my audience with necessary information needed to understand the evolution of SNSs. It’s important to have my audience members on the same page as I am when discussing my objectives for my project. I will mostly be using the history of SNSs in my project.

Bugeja, Michael J. “Facing the Facebook”. Oxford University Press, Vol. 52, 2006. Print.

This research was conducted by a professor at Iowa State University. His results indicate the misuses of Facebook. He acknowledges how his students text-message during class, talk on their cell phones, and use wireless lecture halls as a time to get on Facebook. He does agree that Facebook is a positive tool but students can be affected by social networks. Most of his concerns are how students use Facebook unethically.

His argument concentrates of the improper uses of Facebook. Audience members may include other professors/faculty and students at universities across the nation. Some of his limitations include those who do not have cell phones or lap tops who can’t go on Facebook during class time. Another limitation is it’s hard to distinguish the total amount of students who abuse social networks during classroom time.

I plan to use this information when I discuss negative communication options Facebook has. After reading this article, I realized Facebook tends to be bias because you create what you want others to read about yourself. I plan to include this negative aspect to show that Facebook is not perfect.

DiMicco, Joan Morris, David R. Millen. “Identity Management: Multiple Presentations of Self in Facebook”. Sanibel Island, FL, 2007. Print.

With social networks became popular over night and are becoming common all over the internet. This was a session used to gain an understanding of the issues related to managing different social networks through one system. It also looks at how users use these systems to present themselves among their school, environment, and workplace.

The importance of this session is to see how users of different social networks combine all of them into one. This is something new and already users with multiple accounts use these programs to help organize their profiles. Audience members include those who are existing members of social media networks. A limitation is this is a new gadget; a lot of people do not know this organizer is available.

This information will be useful for my project because it expresses how social networks are expanding and that this effective communication tool is not stopping any time soon. In the future, be expecting a lot of websites, products, or tools to enhance your social media profiles and the way you use them.

Ellison, Nicole B., Cliff Lampe, Charles Steinfield. “Changes in Use and Perception of Facebook”. East Lansing, MI. Michigan State University. Print.

This explains the popularity of social networks and how they are growing from new members. Surveys were given to Facebook members on their personal experience with the website. Reports show that most members have a constant positive attitude toward Facebook. Profiles and attitudes stay constant overtime. It explains how Facebook has changed for the better by producing applications, privacy controls, and other member options.

It’s important to understand how Facebook members feel when using the website. This information is vital because we can understand why Facebook is so popular. Audience members include Facebook members. Limitations are presented by only looking at the good changes Facebook has made. This abstract would be more beneficial if it contained negative aspects as well.

I will use this information when I discuss how Facebook is the most effective social media network. I will explain how they have made changes to improve on how members express their selves. This is necessary information that is needed in my project to prove my point.

Gjoka, Minas, Michael Sirivianos, Athina Markopoulou. “Poking Facebook: Characterization of OSN Applications”. Seattle, WA, 2008. Print.

This focuses on the increase of internet usages. This new tool is changing how people interact, especially with the help of social networks. Social networks, like Facebook are becoming popular because of their new applications. You can now personalize what you want on your Facebook. Applications come in all different categories. The most popular applications are games. Applications are another example that shows how social networks are designed and allow you to become your own author.

This is useful information because it’s one more example of hoe users can personalize their preferences and settings to reflect their interest. Users can view others users with the same application. Without realizing, users are assigned and grouped with one another who share interest in that application. Audience members include those who are members of social media websites. A certain limitation this article is missing is that not all social networking websites offer applications.

The information above is useful in my project because it describes how social media networks link one person with another without introducing one another. It will provide evidence in my project that social networks are solely made to link others with similar characteristics and interest.

Gosling, Samuel D., Sam Gaddis, Vazire Simine. “Personality Impressions Based on Facebook Profiles”. Austin, TX. Print.

The study above concentrates on how Online Social-Networking Websites (OSNWs) like Facebook, are changing the dynamics of how individuals become acquainted. Its main purpose is to determine how accurate are impressions based on OSNW profiles. Based on 133 Facebook profiles, profile authors did engage in some self-enhancement and impressions show some accuracy.

Importance of this information can show how Facebook (along with other OSNWs) play a greater role in the social landscape when communicating. Audience members include members of OSNW. Limitations include bias or made up profiles on Facebook.

I plan to use this in my project because it focuses on two crucial parts for my project. It explains and identifies our virtual impressions based on hoe we interact of Facebook. It shows how we are becoming less timid/anxious from limiting face to face communications.

Grossman, Lev. “Nerd World: Why Facebook is the Future”. NY, NY, 2007. Print.

This article focuses on the popular growing website of Facebook. It explains the benefits to using Facebook and compares this social website to others. It states how Facebook is growing everyday and not only is it popular with young adults but also with adults over the age of 35. It gave future insights of what to expect in the future with Facebook.

This shows how Facebook is becoming popular among all age groups. This is important because it we are seeing many different people from all over the world with similar demographics becoming friends on Facebook. Since this deals with almost every age groups, there is a numerous amount audience members. No matter what your age is, this article can relate to you.

I will use the comparisons from this article in my project. Comparing Facebook with other social media networks will prove my argument of how Facebook is the leading social media website. This source will also back my statement up when I declare Facebook is the leading and most effective social media network.

Joinson, Adam N. “Looking At, Looking Up, or Keeping Up With People?: Motives and Use of Facebook”. NY, NY: ACM Press, 2008. Print.

This paper investigates the uses of social networking site Facebook, and the gratifications users derive from those uses. There were two separate studies done on Facebook users. The first study had 137 users describe how they use Facebook and what they enjoyed about their use. These descriptions were then grouped into 42 different categories (most popular answers) and then were completed again by 241 users. Results expressed seven common categories: social connection, shared identities, content, social investigation, social network surfing and status updating. People with common cultures/demographics were also associated.

This study is important as it shows how people with same cultures/demographics interact more and how most Facebook users use this website for similar reasons. These seven categories link us together while we supply information about ourselves. Audience members include Facebook members and potential members. Limitations include other users from other social networking websites. It’s hard to distinguish the common categories if they only study members of Facebook only.

The seven most common uses of Facebook will be used for my project. It is interesting how most people are using Facebook to communicate with others. This aspect can help explain how Facebook is an excellent “new” way to communicate and interact with others.

Lewis, Kevin, Jason Kaufman, Marco Gonzalez, Andreas Wimmer. “Tates,
Ties, and Time: A New Social Network Dataset Using Facebook”
. University of CA, 2008. Print

The article illustrates the features, social structure, and culture Facebook develops for its users. It expresses the five fundamental features Facebook offers for interaction. Friends, pictures, wall post, messaging, and instant chat are the five communication fundamentals. The article concludes that these fundamentals create an easier interaction for people.

The importance of this article is to observe and discuss how Facebook links similar cultures/people together by their communication tools. Audience members include those who use Facebook. Behavior examinations are limited because it only concentrates on only five specific communication tools. There could be different ways to communicate in Facebook that the article does not discuss.

This is useful for my project because it focuses on the specific ways people interact with each other. With this detailed information I can explain in depth on each communicating function. The social structure will be used in my project to explain how Facebook links similar groups together.

Pennington, Natalie. “Will You Be My Friend: Facebook as a Model for the Evolution of the Social Penetration Theory”. San Diego, CA, Nov 20, 2008. Print.

This study examines how college students use Facebook to communicate and how social networks are transforming the ways we communicate. Examiners determined computer-mediated communication (CMC) was a major impact on how these ways of communication were transforming. The study discusses the importance of all the different ways Facebook members can communicate.CMC is used by younger adults more so than face to face communication. Results show communication has several layers when interacting with others from the help of Facebook.

The importance of the study shows how rapid this change is affecting young adults all over the world. Facebook along with other social networks, are growing from usage of their members. Audience members include college students and younger adults who use Facebook or other social networks. A big limitation this study had was the number of participants in the study. Only 16 students were used to represent the whole college community.

This material is useful because it discusses how Facebook is changing the ways we interact with each other. CMC is a new communication tool that is developing among younger adults. I plan to use this term in my project. The whole study contains useful information that I will use in my research. The results fit perfectly with what I want to prove to my audience members. This study is a perfect example of how Facebook has become an effective tool on how we interact with others.

My Project So Far...

At first, I was going to concentrate on social media networks for my project. From researching I discovered that this was to broad of a topic. So I decided to focus more on Facebook. My project so far has been over whelming. The information that I have found has been very challenging. Since Facebook is new, it's hard to determine what are facts and opinions. I would consider secondary information it a credited source. I hope to express to my readers how Facebook is an effective tool and the most powerful tool it has, is that you control what you want other to know. It's the fastest way to give/receive information. I hope to express how these "links" can take you all over the world.

Annotated Bib : Facebook Research

Facebook Research: An Annotated Bibliography

Ellison, Nicole B., Charles Steinfield, and Cliff Lampe. The Benefits of Facebook “Friends:” Social Capital and College Students' Use of Online Social Network Sites. Michigan State University: Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media. Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, 2007. Print.

This case study examines the relationship between the use of Facebook and the formation of social capital (bonding with others actual or virtual) toward undergraduate students. Social media websites like Facebook, allows others to present themselves while maintaining connections with others. The study describes how virtual communities help people stay in contact with one anther. This bonding helps a variety of populations, including professional and community members.

Facebook users engage in “searching” for people who have similarities. From this, social capital is gained. Even though the Internet detracts from face-to-face time with others, it can control anxiety or any other nervous behaviors. The study concludes that computer interactions have had a positive effect on community interaction with social capital. A random sample survey was the method for this study. Demographics where taken and participants were asked if they were members of Facebook. Questionnaires were based on how users interact on Facebook.

There is a bridge between social networks like Facebook and social capital. Resulting in the more social capital skills one had, the more they interacted on Facebook. Results show there is a strong relationship between social capital and Facebook.

Muise A. More Information than you ever wanted: does Facebook bring out the green-eyed monster of jealousy? Cyberpsychology & Behavior: The Impact of the Internet, Multimedia and Virtual Reality on Behavior and Society, 2009 August; Vol. 12. Print

Facebook is rapidly growing and is changing the nature of social relationships. The article suggests that Facebook may cause an increase amount of jealousy to someone. There are many different ways to interact with someone. This creates different levels of relationships. Friends and Foes begin to mesh together. This study provides evidence that Facebook contributes to behavior of jealousy.

Friends from all over the world link together by a click of a button. There are many ways to interact with someone of Facebook. Yes, this is a great connecting tool but Facebook can cause unnecessary behaviors. Jealousy is found with those who tend to “Facebook stalk”. “Facebook stalk” is known as someone who investigates and looks at one anther's Facebook Page. Sometimes, footage or other information is discovered and can bring out the green-eyed monster called Jealousy.

It's true when they say not everything can be perfect and Facebook shows proof of this. Jealousy can spark and Facebook creates jealousy from its convenience. It's a guarantee that someone is on Facebook no matter what time of day/night it is. This never ending website will always create jealousy no matter how effective it is to the world.

Westlake, E.J. Friend Me if You Facebook Generation Y and Per formative Surveillance. The Drama Review, Winter 2008; Vol 52. Print.

The article above describes the evolving world of Facebook and how Generation Y is using this virtual world. Generation Y consumes of children born from 1991 to present time. Westlake describes how members of Facebook use it to build and embrace their “real” relationships through their unique performances of their online self. It's believed Generation Y is socially and politically disengaged because of technology.

Studies have been conducted and results show young people are spending more time on the computer for social interaction. The additions that Facebook has also increase interaction among Generation Y. Not only can you comment on yourself but you can comment on other people by, poking, rating, judging, messaging, chatting, ...need I go on?

Generation Y has a trust for technology. Users of Facebook reveal their status to their chosen audience. If this generation listens to social media websites, is it possible to direct them positively to a socially political way? Facebook is directing this generation by influencing their members in social and political aspects. It is not too late

Final Production : Evolution of Social Media

Here is my final trailer for multimedia English. I hope you enjoy, I worked very hard on this. At first, I did not like QuickTime Pro. I went to Apple.com and looked for the tutorial page. This was not helpful either, Apple has bad instructions and I recommend hiring someone who can explain better. After visiting with my professor, I was able to work on the program. He explained and showed me how to make my video out of still images, add text and music. In anther post below you can see how frustrated I was. This is a different post though. I would work with QuickTime Pro again if necessary.

What and Who is/are the Multimedia Author(s)?

Lawrence Lessig gave examples on how others become multimedia authors. He explains the importance of technology starting with the past. Plagiarism has evolved over time and it seems to have several degrees. Some degrees bring out more of a creative side and other degrees are usually not intentional. There is a fine line between plagiarism and creativity. Our world is turning into a big melting pot and with that comes a cluster of cultures. It's not unusual to see a cluster of cultures combines into one.

For example, let's look at the historical piece of Pride and Prejudice. This classic was written by Jane Austen over centuries ago and it is still popular today. Someone who was fond of this book, Seth Smith decided to extend this century old classic into a pop culture phenomenal. He does give credit to Austen but he added his own twist. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was his new edition to the romance novel.

We are starting to see spin-offs like this in every form whether it's with books, music, or any other pieces made by new authors. The question is, is it pop culture and creativeness or is it plagiarism? This question is transforming the degrees of plagiarism. When does it cross the line? Would you consider Pride and Prejudice and Zombies a plagiarism piece
